The first install of the new MASH Test Level 3 compliant SoftStop guardrail end terminal has been completed on the Cambridge Bypass project. This install is a first for the ANZ region with a MASH compliant end terminal, offering superior roadside protection to users of this busy highway. The terminal is designed to contain a much heavier vehicle of 2270kg, under much more onerous impact conditions such as severe impact angles. The terminal has proven its ability to contain vehicle impacts which have over 40% higher impact energy than what traditional terminals are designed to contain.
The terminal encompasses a unique anchorage design which allows the guardrail run to remain anchored during end on impacts, when impacted according to MASH TL3 conditions. Using a proprietary head that flattens and extrudes W-beam guardrail upon end-on impacts, the SoftStop dissipates energy while guiding flattened rail through the mouth at the bottom of the unit.
